Can you believe it? We are less than a week away from being to accept submissions here at Farstrider HQ! Since the time is nearly upon us, I thought it would be helpful to go into a bit of detail on the types of stories that we are looking for.
We are a Fantasy magazine, and we welcome submissions of all types that can fall under that umbrella. We may become more selective over time, but as we get started here I'd like to cast as wide a net as possible and see what mysterious and unique stories can be pulled out from the deep. Of course, we still have our preferences. We are partial to lighter stories of whimsy and wonder, and would love to see stories with a sense of humor along the lines of Terry Pratchett, Robert Asprin, or a World of Warcraft quest about lost dwarven ale. These are the stories that will likely rise to the top, but don't let that keep you from submitting something outside the boundaries of this guideline if it is one that you are particularly proud of.
We are looking for original stories only, meaning those that you have not published elsewhere before, including on your own personal site. We prefer stories that can be easily read in one quick sitting, so we are targeting stories that are 1,000-4,000 words. We pay $.03 per word for the rights to publish your story first and exclusively for six months. We may also include your story in a print anthology at the end of the year. After the six month period of exclusivity expires, your story will remain on our website here, but you are free to do whatever else you like with it.
Since we are brand new, I don't expect to be flooded with submissions right off the bat. That can only benefit you, since your odds of publication will likely be higher with Farstrider than with other, more established magazines. Even though we are new, I assure you that we do take this very seriously, that we are here to stay, and that we will at least pretend to know what we are doing. This means having a few house rules:
I think that pretty much covers everything. If you have any questions or if anything seems unclear, feel free to post in the comments.
I hope to see all of your stories soon!
